The following article was written by Jonathan Cushing from Transparency International Global Health and remarks on the need for increased political will and action to address corruption in health systems to achieve UHC and improve global pandemic preparedness efforts.

This blog article summarizes the GNACTA Network Event that took place on 23 May 2023 in Geneva during the World Health Assembly. This event set out to problematize the critical topic of corruption as it relates to UHC and global health security looking at the COVID-19 pandemic response as an opportunity to learn from in how to strengthen health systems now in the post pandemic period. Nearly 70 participants joined the event in person as well as virtually.

Throughout the pandemic, U4 conducted research and published several reports on fraud and corruption in the context of Covid-19. We used this evidence to identify ‘red flags’ for corruption risks affecting pandemic responses and provided advice for policymakers and practitioners to help them spot, mitigate, and reduce corruption risks during health emergencies.

From early in the pandemic, U4 implemented urgent research on allegations of corruption in Covid-19 emergency responses. We used this to outline important ‘red flags’ for fraud and corruption risks and give policy recommendations to help spot and mitigate corruption risks.
